Basic Information on Installation/Update/Upgrade

Preparation

No backups, restores, or other jobs may be running during the update.

Security/Encryption

When setting up AES-encrypted backups/image pools (new as of version 9.1.x), NovaStor DataCenter generates a key file named enc.properties. The master encryption key is stored there. Without this file, it is not possible to decrypt encrypted backups! Even NovaStor cannot make the data accessible to you without this file!

Therefore, be sure to back up this file to another data carrier (e.g., USB stick) and store it in a secure location (safe, other fire compartment, etc.).
The enc.properties file to be backed up can be found at the following path
  • Windows: C:\Program Files\NovaStor\DataCenter\etc
  • Linux: /opt/NovaStor/DataCenter/etc
Note: The key file is only created during the first encrypted backup!

Security / Passwords

Ensure that you set up an email address and a password for each NovaStor DataCenter user that complies with your company's security guidelines.
In the application settings, also set up a mail server that NovaStor DataCenter can use to send emails!
Only then can you set a new password by logging into the NovaStor DataCenter web console and clicking on “Forgot password” if necessary.

Prerequisites

NovaStor DataCenter version 9.3.12 or higher is installed. All installed clients and servers, including CommandServer, have the same NovaStor DataCenter version.

Update to 9.4.x

Prerequisites

NovaStor DataCenter version 9.3.12 or higher is installed. All installed clients and servers, including CommandServer, have the same NovaStor DataCenter version.

Procedure

  1. First, update the CommandServer using the downloaded installer.
  2. Then update all clients via server management in the CommandServer interface.
  3. If you have VMware/Hyper-V backup jobs that are backed up to an agent media pool, these must be converted to either an existing image pool or a newly created disk media pool.
  4. NovaStor DataCenter can be used.

Important changes

  • The new disk media pool replaces the agent and image media pools. The latter can still be used as before. It is no longer possible to create a new agent or image media pool.
  • The Full/Incremental/Differential retention scheme has been removed. Existing configurations have been converted to the ‘Number of Backups’ scheme. Adjustments may be necessary here.
  • Newly created VMware backups have the ‘Deduplication’ option set by default. Deduplicated backups can currently only be saved in the Disk Media Pool.
